Chasing Rattlesnakes All Night with My Daughter

I headed out west with my daughter for a night of camping and herping. We grabbed snacks, talked the whole drive, and spent the night road cruising, moving rattlesnakes and other snakes safely off the road.

We tried to set up camp, but plans changed, so we stayed out late and kept checking roads into the early morning. Before heading home, we took a short hike to see what the desert had to offer in daylight.

This trip wasn’t about finding as much as possible — it was about time together, learning, and being out there.

Baby Rattlesnake or Harmless Snake? How to Tell the Difference

In this episode, we’re taking a close look at baby rattlesnakes — what they actually look like, and how to tell them apart from harmless species that often get mislabeled online. We start things off by debunking some of the most common myths about identifying baby rattlesnakes. To show how easy it is to get it wrong, Jeff uses a Sonoran Lyresnake he found in the field — a harmless little snake that gets mistaken for a rattlesnake all the time.

From there, we head out on a series of real relocation calls involving baby rattlesnakes. These calls highlight the differences between young rattlesnakes and the many harmless species they’re confused with. If you’ve ever wondered how to reliably identify a baby rattlesnake, or what these situations look like from our side of the call, this is a good one.

Snakes Interrupted Our Costa Rican Family Vacation

I do my best to separate snake stuff from family time… but it doesn’t always work out that way. This past winter, I took a trip to Costa Rica with my wife, kids, and parents for a quiet family vacation. While the goal wasn’t herping, we still managed to find a few interesting reptiles along the way — and caught some quick clips in the process. Nothing too intense, just some relaxed time in the tropics with a few cool sightings mixed in.
