Rattlesnakes are All Over these New Mexico Roads!

Rattlesnakes are All Over these New Mexico Roads!

In this one I head to New Mexico for a friend’s wedding, but left up a few days early to explore some habitat that I’ve been meaning to check out for some time. Normally I’ll pick apart maps and habitat before a trip, but this time I ditched the prep and just stopped wherever the terrain looked good—random pull-offs, backroads, and whatever canyon caught my eye.

It worked. I ended up finding Prairie Rattlesnakes, Banded Rocks, Blacktails, Ringneck Snakes, and a handful of other things. I also swung through White Sands to photograph the bleached earless lizard, an endemic that looks like it was made for that landscape.
