Why Did This Rattlesnake Stay by the Front Door for Three Hours?

Several rattlesnake calls came in around the same time on a night shift. Jason was handling one, Drayvin was on another, and a third homeowner was patiently waiting for someone to become available.

The homeowners had first spotted a rattlesnake near their front door around 6 PM and called us at 7. By 8:30, Drayvin was finally able to check in and ask whether the snake was still there and if they still needed her to come out.

Surprisingly, it was.

Drayvin arrived a little after 9 PM, more than three hours after the snake had first been spotted. By then, the sun had set and temperatures had dropped. She had expected the rattlesnake to have moved along on its own.

Finding a rattlesnake in one place for several hours isn’t necessarily unusual, but something about this situation seemed a little odd.

Then she arrived and immediately understood why it hadn’t moved.
