Phoenix 85050 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner went to check on her tomato plants in the backyard when she was startled by a rattlesnake caught in the netting she had used to cover the plants. Fortunately, it was a very nice day, so the heat didn’t harm the snake. It was tangled in one spot, but it hadn’t been cut by the netting and was perfectly fine. The snake was a gravid female. The homeowner hadn’t seen a rattlesnake in 20 years, even though she lives fairly close to the desert. Her yard had only one good source of shade: a lantana bush.

Phoenix 85050 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner looked out the window and saw a rattlesnake coiled up near the block wall on the side of the home. It was right next to a drain opening in the wall. I searched the rest of the yard but did not find any other snakes. Although there is a drainage running behind the home where they have seen snakes, this is the first that they have had in their yard in 4 years.

Phoenix 85050 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake A security guard called about a large rattlesnake that was hanging out near their entrance. The western Diamondback was discovered hanging out under a yucca plant when I arrived. It was in the middle of a parking lot so the snake was likely just cruising around and got a little lost amongst the asphalt. Snake released into a large rodent hole near a wash within estimated home range.

Phoenix 85050 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Received a call about a rattlesnake on a back patio. Customer’s daughter greeted me at the front door and escorted me to the back patio. Met with homeowner out there and she pointed to a futon against the side of a wall underneath patio. I observed an atrox in ambush between a small ceramic statue of a tortoise and a small one of a toad. I pulled the futon from against the wall and utilized tongs in attempt to capture. Snake turned out to be much bigger than I had thought and it quickly became defensive. It wedged itself between the statues and the eave of the stucco and it struck at my tongs several times. I eventually was able to capture and bucket it. Provided an inspection on back yard. Yard area sloped up towards the back wall. A fair bit of landscape plants but nothing really overgrown. Brick wall all the way around with only two entry points in the yard. Drainage hole on the NW side yard and a gate on the SE side yard. Gate would definitely have been easier for snake to get into and I suspect it came from here. Customer stated she has had a few snakes in the 11 years she has lived in the home but all were non-venomous and this was her first rattlesnake. This house would not have been on the top of my list for an atrox encounter. Immediate area has been fairly developed for some time. The closest habitat was a wash that cut through the neighborhood that connected wide open desert on either side of the neighborhood. The closest access point to the wash was about 3 blocks to the NW and the second nearest being another wash maybe 4-5 blocks to SE. I wasn’t able to get a definitive answer from customer about fence quote but it appears she checked the box for it.

Phoenix 85050 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Received a call about a rattlesnake in the backyard near a cactus. Arrived at the home, and the customers escorted me to the backyard. I noticed an adult atrox in ambush against a wall, just to the left of a clump of opuntia. I attempted to capture it using tongs, but the snake slipped out and escaped into the clump of opuntia. I asked the customer if I could remove paddles of the cactus, and they replied, “Please do.” I removed a large portion of the clump using my tongs and hook. The snake remained sheltered behind the large base mound of the cactus. I decided to use a hose to flood the area, and the snake eventually made its way out, where I captured it with tongs and bucketed it without incident. There were small strips of habitat nearby, but the home was fairly deep inside the neighborhood. The customers stated they have had gopher snakes before but never a rattlesnake. Given the size and age of the snake, I suspect it may have been eking out a living in the neighborhood for some time. The backyard had plenty of shade and drip irrigation. I pointed this out to the customer and provided education on snake behavior. Due to the location of the house within the neighborhood, suggesting fencing did not seem appropriate. The customer was insistent on paying by invoice.

Phoenix 85050 Coachwhip The homeowner called about a young coachwhip in his swimming pool. I removed the snake and conducted a quick search for others. It was clean and wide open, with a small pool and almost no landscaping. He did request to be contacted about fencing.

Phoenix 85050 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner was on her back patio when she noticed the neonate rattlesnake coiled underneath a little table on the back patio. The home had a lot of desert behind them and also on the side of them. The baby rattlesnake looked like something had attacked it and bitten part of its tail off. It didn’t have a full button on it, only a little piece left, and there was a wound that was healing. The little one needed a meal but otherwise seemed to be ok. They had a block fence and one gate.

Phoenix 85050 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake A homeowner in North Phoenix called about a small rattlesnake found under her trash can. The yard did not have much usable habitat for the snake, and since this little one is only a few months old he probably just thought he found a good place for the winter underneath the trashcan. I hiked him out to the nearby desert north of the neighborhood and placed him in a large pile of sticks and landscape trimmings that were dumped out here… sad to see of course, but they make a great winter spot for rattlesnakes.

Phoenix 85050 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake This was at a public dog park. The lady just pulled up to take her dog in, and when she stepped out, she heard what she thought was her tire deflating. When she went to look, she saw the rattlesnake and a squirrel not moving nearby. The snake was right in front of her car. While I drove there, she watched the snake eat the squirrel and then climb into a sewer drain. It took some time, but I was able to get the snake out with its big belly filled with squirrel. The dog park is surrounded by desert.

When I was there the rattlesnake was crawling along the wall near the entrance as described I easily contained the baby in the bucket for relocation. The home was in a well-developed neighborhood with only small patches of desert habitat nearby, they have a block wall with a gate for the back yard, I inspected it further and they are interested in learning about the rattlesnake fencing.

Phoenix 85050 Sonoran Gophersnake We got a call from the homeowners saying that there was a snake in their garage. I arrived to find a very tidy, and uncluttered space. There was almost nowhere for a snake to hide, and I was quickly able to check the entire area. I wanted to see about the gaps in the corners of the door, so I had them close it again for me. As I was looking for small spaces where a snake could enter or exit, we spotted the snake wedged up in the sections of the door. With the door open, the snake had been suspended just above our heads the entire time. It was thankfully unharmed. I did not find any additional snakes on the property, which was close to open, native habitat as well as a golf course.
