I placed it at the edge of a burrow leading into a packrat midden complex. It remained coiled and silent, its head hidden, until I adjusted its placement a few times and it realized it was at the mouth of the burrow. At that point, it quickly disappeared inside.

Today, a second snake had apparently joined the first, and they were both coiled under an overhanging stone with a burrow behind it, shaded by a small Opuntia species of cactus. Snakes were older-looking male and female Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes. Temps were in the 60s and both snakes were sluggish. I have had multiple snake calls in this neighborhood over my tenure with RS.

This isn’t the first time this family has encountered rattlesnakes in their backyard. With Easter being tomorrow, the family was worried they wouldn’t be able to participate in their family Easter egg hunt with a rattlesnake in their yard. After calling several different places with no success, they thankfully called us and we came out to handle it. I captured the snake and released it to nearby habitat into a large packrat nest.
