I put some water into the entrance and eventually got three snakes that came out to coil and drink under the spray of the hose. Nearby was a great horned owl nest and a baby.

11:30 AM		 Dewey 86327 Mojave Rattlesnake Quail Wood subdivision on the edge of Prescott Valley and Dewey. The home is at the rear of the subdivision, backing up to open land. The homeowner found and dispatched one Mojave around midnight in the side yard. They found a second about ten yards away this morning and called it in. The customer is interested in rattlesnake fencing.

She lives on the edge of the community, with a large expanse of desert to the west, and her yard now has very little vegetation. Her dog was bitten by a rattlesnake last year, and since then she has cleared out most of her yard. She put up fencing herself because, she said, her HOA would not allow us to install it. I pointed out the problem areas in her fencing.

The entire neighborhood is under construction with new plots and is tucked into the mountains. There is also a wash directly behind the customer’s house.

Under the overhang of her home, she has river rocks pushed up against the wall, and he told her there were two large rattlesnakes underneath. When I arrived, I found two gophersnakes instead, and she was fine with keeping them around. Her yard was large but very well maintained, and this shaded courtyard area was the only real shade in the yard. Her home has some desert landscaping around it, but it’s more sporadic between the houses.

He went to cover the hole when he saw a snake’s head coming out and thought there were two snakes. The snake was in a brick, not in the actual island itself, but more in the wall of it. The hole was due to erosion and wasn’t supposed to be there. I put water into the hole for about 30 minutes and the snake finally came out. I don’t think there were ever two snakes. The home has some desert directly behind it and much more throughout the community.

She then lost sight of the snake and called us, believing it was a rattlesnake. It turned out to be a gophersnake, which had climbed into a tall bush just behind her fence. I was able to locate and safely capture it, and it did have a bolus. The property has a significant amount of desert habitat across the street.

This was an odd time to see it because it was 100 degrees out and the turf was very hot. I checked her backyard first, and she didn’t have much cover. I then went to the neighbor’s courtyard, which was very close, and found the snake coiled by their front door. The homes have a lot of desert just across the street.

The front of the house was wide open with many access points, though the backyard had already been protected with rattlesnake fencing. The snake had just eaten something three times its size and was not very nimble, so it was an easy capture and relocation into a large pack rat nest west of the property.

The Western Diamondback had settled into a small divot in the dirt between two large bushes. The home backs directly onto open desert and the yard is not fenced, so the snake likely wandered in while searching for shade and water, which this yard has plenty of. The yard has many bushes and flowing water features but is well maintained, and the homeowners understand their situation: they love wildlife but do not want venomous snakes in their yard. The snake was hiked back into the desert behind their home and released in deep cover in a wash.

10:00 PM		 Mesa 85212 Mojave Rattlesnake A tenant Mesa called to report a snake curled up outside their front door. They snapped a photo and sent it to me, and I was able to identify it as a Mojave Rattlesnake. This is an unusual area for a rattlesnake—there are some patches of desert to the south of the apartments, but they’re currently being developed. The snake was likely pushed out of that habitat and ended up at the complex. Unfortunately, this meant I had to find an alternative release site, as the only remaining habitat within its home range is now gone. I transported the snake a few miles east to open desert and released it into a large creosote mound near a wash, where it will hopefully acclimate and live a long life.

7:30 AM		 Sun City 85373 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Dispatched to a call in Peoria/Sun City for a snake in a backyard. While speaking to the customer on the phone, she reported that she was watering her plants when she noticed a coiled “diamondback” underneath one of them. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the customer and led into the east-facing backyard, where she pointed out the snake’s location. I observed a juvenile Western Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) in an ambush position underneath a hibiscus with a drip line. I used large tongs to safely capture the snake and place it in a bucket without incident. The snake may have been sleeping, as it did not rattle at any point. The customer stated that she first saw the snake in the same spot where I captured it, while watering that particular plant. She mentioned that she normally does not hand-water that plant but decided to do so this morning. She also reported that the snake did not rattle or move; she simply noticed it lying there. I conducted an inspection of the rest of the backyard and found no additional snakes. There is a catwalk running to the south of the property from the street to a community pond located east of the home. One small portion of the fence has chicken wire attached. I pointed this area out to the customer and offered a free fencing quote, which they accepted. This house is in an unusual location for C. atrox activity, as it is in the interior of the neighborhood, with approximately five rows of houses in every direction before reaching any desert habitat. I noted that the neighborhood is enclosed by solid block walls with no obvious drainage holes, and is bordered by two main roads to the north and west. For a snake to reach this property from natural desert, it would have to travel a considerable distance. While not impossible, this seems unlikely. Given the estimated age of the snake, I suspect it may have been born somewhere within the neighborhood and has managed to survive there for a little over a year. I do not believe the snake had been in the yard for long, as I saw no signs of denning. I believe it may have entered the yard from either the north or south side via drainage gaps or a gate. The customers stated they have never seen a snake in the 10 years they have owned the home. Considering the home’s location, I do not think it is unreasonable to assume this may have been the first snake to enter their yard.
