8:00 AM		 Tucson 85742 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The customer called about a rattlesnake on his driveway that had crawled onto a bush. The snake was a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake and it looked to be a female roughly a year old. It was 65 degrees out but the driveway had a nice little sunny patch. The bush the snake retreated to was a large Rosemary and it was next to an even larger one. Neither bush appeared to have a midden in it but one had a remarkably large spiny lizard.

The snake was under a lawn mower in the back yard. The home is right on South Mountain with a few rocky hillsides nearby. They have a large yard. They have had several snakes over the years and their dog has previously been bitten. The snake was likely going to be hibernating in the near by large rocks on the hillside

4:00 PM		 Tucson 85718 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake This call came from a renter at an apartment complex situated above a long steep grade (20 meters or so) descending to an urban wash. Apparently, this area has rattlesnakes all the time, according to the customer and other renters who were watching. The temp is currently 79 and there is a light rain. There is an old, decaying sidewalk at the top of the grade that tenants can use to walk behind this wing of the this particular unit. There are old drainage pipes leading beneath river stone landscaping and just over the fence there are multiple large holes into the side of the hill. There is also a packrat midden that is collapsing into the hillside right next to the fence. The snake was one of the older large, robust Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes and looks to be a male.

10:30 PM		 Cave Creek 85331 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner called about a rattlesnake resting next to the side of her home. I arrived and found that the snake had not moved and then captured it. The home is situated in the middle of a neighborhood but has a wash running just behind the property. There is a lot of landscaping in the backyard, but it looked very well maintained. There were several plants however that needed to be cut back to expose the ground below. The home also has snake fencing that was there when the current owners moved in. I searched but did not find any record of us installing a fence at that address. The fence was in decent shape but compromised in several places. The homeowner was very concerned about the snake and wanted to be contacted about a fencing consultation soon as she has several dogs.

8:00 PM		 Mesa 85205 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner called about a Western Diamondback that was curled up outside her back door. The snake was discovered when she let her dog out. She thought the dog may have been bit so she took him to the vet. Turned out there was no bite so all is well. Took snake back into the nearby desert and released it into a large packrat nest.

10:30 AM		 Phoenix 85050 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake A homeowner in North Phoenix called about a small rattlesnake found under her trash can. The yard did not have much usable habitat for the snake, and since this little one is only a few months old he probably just thought he found a good place for the winter underneath the trashcan. I hiked him out to the nearby desert north of the neighborhood and placed him in a large pile of sticks and landscape trimmings that were dumped out here… sad to see of course, but they make a great winter spot for rattlesnakes.

10:30 PM		 Tucson 85747 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Homeowner called for a small western diamondback that was on their back porch. The snake was relocated into the desert nearby. The customer was interested in fencing, the yard is a brick wall with one metal side gate and one small drainage hole on either side.

2:00 PM		 Tucson 85718 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake This homeowner discovered a small rattlesnake sitting on some rocks outside of an enclosure for a desert tortoise. It was 55 degrees and beginning to rain. I assume the snake was risking the cold for water. After flooding a rodent burrow that connected to the tortoise enclosure i was able to produce a YOY Western Diamondback Rattlesnake and a sleepy tortoise.

The couple was very lovely and answered basic questions about safety when going through the items in their garage such as not leaving garage open and placing their hands only in places they can see.

11:30 AM		 Cave Creek 85331 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake Snake under front door and was almost hidden but he was a little too big to be squeezing underneath the closed screen door. Homeowner has 2 greyhounds that have been trained but its been about a year. They did not have a reaction to snake. Referred to Rattlesnake Ranch. The homeowner is also interested in fencing. Yard is about 50% view fence, 1 flood hole seen, and 1 side gate. Really nice guy from Ohio. Has been here 6 years and has had his first 2 snakes this week.

The back of the home was surrounded by brick wall and the drain screens looked secure so it would appear that this snake may have gotten in under the back gate. The yard itself was pretty clean and free from apparent snake shelters.

2:00 PM		 Cave Creek 85331 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner was doing yard work in the front yard when he saw a rattlesnake coiled by his yucca. He pushed it out of his yard but then it just sat in the road and he thought it may get hit by a car so he called to have it relocated. The snake was ok thankfully. The snake was coiled under a plant right by this guys garage and the garage had gaps in it. I believe it was hibernating in the garage and came out on a nice day. The home had a bunch of state trust land across the street.

I got the snake out of that box and near it was two ac units. The snake may have been under the AC unit pad. There was a little entry point. The home had some desert next to it and in between the other homes. It had a block fence and one gate.

When she moved the trash can that was near it she noticed the rattlesnake coiled up behind it. The garage floor had just been redone three weeks ago and the garage was very clean. The snake could have been in a nearby closet in the garage without being seen. They had a gap in the garage door. The home had desert all around it and throughout the other homes.

Given the temperature was in the 60’s the snake was rather lethargic and easy to capture. I held on to the snake overnight as I was not familiar with the area and wanted to hike it to its new home in the daylight. Released into a packrat nest in its estimated home range.

Dog alerted them to the snake (dog was not bit, did a great job warning homeowner about the snake). Yard was large and had plenty of hiding spots and the snake was likely going to spend the winter here. Took the snake out into the nearby desert and placed it into deep cover of a large rock pile above a wash away from homes but likely still in the snake’s home range. Ahwatukee

2:00 PM		 Cave Creek 85331 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake A few weeks ago, I got a call from a gentleman who was having work done on his hot tub in the backyard. The hot tub guy saw two rattlesnakes at the entrance of the door going into the hot tub. One slithered to the back before I got there but I was able to grab one. A few days later the homeowner said the snake was at the entrance of the hot tub again. Maggie went but she wasn’t able to snag it before it slithered into the back again. Then a few weeks passed and he finally saw it at the entrance again today. I was able to grab it. The home backs up to some desert and the community has a lot of desert near by.

She has family in town and was worried about the grandkids getting bit. They placed a small trash bin over the snake to keep it from going anywhere. Home is very large and surrounded by desert, likely not the first time a rattlesnake has been around. I took the diamondback into the nearby desert and found it a nice packrat nest at the base of an ironwood tree away from homes. North Scottsdale

I found the snake under some stuff, not too far from there. The garage door had gaps in the corners so the snake could easily get in and out. The home was a few homes away from the open desert. This was a neonate and it had plenty of places in the garage to be tucked away and out of sight.

1:00 PM		 Scottsdale 85255 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner was on her back patio when she saw a little snake head poking out from under a large pot on her back patio. There was a dying centipede near the neonate so I’m not sure if the little one envenomated it. I was able to get the little one out from under the pot. There was also a large shedded king snake skin under there. She said she saw the king a few months before she let it stay. This was large property with a lot of vegetation but it was all very clean. Next to the big pot, about 7 feet away, was a grill island that I believe the snake was staying under for winter. She is scheduled to get our fencing done already in the spring. There is some desert just behind her back wall.

9:30 AM		 Phoenix 85045 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner opened his electrical box lid that was on the ground in his front yard and there was a rattlesnake in there. The lid wasn’t on very good and this was a very deep box about a foot and a half deep. The neonate would have never got out of there. There was a little rodent hole at the bottom where the snake was staying warm. The home was right off the South Mountain Preserve.

This yard was all cement with really no cover. There was a small shed on the cement that the snake could go inside through a gap in the door. The home is at the front of the community and the desert is a block away behind it. They have a block fence and one gate.

6:00 PM		 Wickenburg 85390 Western Diamondback Rattlesnake The homeowner called about a baby rattlesnake that she happened to see crawl into a hole on her property. The 5-acre property was located west of Wickenburg in a very flat and sandy area with a lot of Creosote scrub. There was a pond on the property surrounded by a small riparian area which included several large packrat nests. I arrived and was able to flush the snake out with a little bit of water from a hose. I searched the property for the mother and or siblings but did not find any. The temperature at the time of capture was in the mid 50's but the daytime highs were close to 80 degrees.
