12:30 AM |
Phoenix | 85024 | Western Diamondback Rattlesnake | Received a call about a rattlesnake at the back door of a home in north Phoenix. Arrived at home and callers wife greeted me at front door and provided me a key for the side gate. Entered the back yard and greeted customer who showed me the snake. Observed a young adult atrox in ambush in corner of the patio facing east. Utilized tongs to capture snake without incident. Snake did not rattle. Performed quick inspection of back and front yards. Customer stated they saw it the night before and were able to chase it away with a spade. Customer saw it on a Ring camera before calling 911. Customer had stated they have never seen a snake in the 6 years they have lived there. This was an unusual area to find an atrox. The closest access point to habitat was several blocks to the NE. No wash or other surrounding habitat. Home was in the middle of a neighborhood. Thinking the snake may have been in the area for a while I checked the front yard and surrounding homes for places a snake might try to den in. The customer had a car in the driveway with a car cover that draped down to the concrete. I suspect the snake may have taken refuge under this for at least a day or so and would move into the backyard via side gate at night in search of food or water. Backyard small and free of landscaping largely but several pieces of patio furniture with covers. Provided customers education on snake behavior and my suspicions of why the snake was there. Informed them that the home itself was an odd area to find a rattlesnake but to exercise awareness in the future. |
