Fer De Lance On The Trail
A Fer De Lance found resting in the center of the trail a short distance from camp in the Peruvian Amazon earlier in the year. The color and chaotic pattern of this snake would make it easy to miss, which could be a fatal mistake in the remote location we were at.
Rainbow Boa in the Amazon
An especially bitey Rainbow Boa was found cruising around in the leaf litter between amazingly large trees in the Amazon. These snakes are popular in the pet trade, for obvious reasons. Amazon Tree Boa
An Amazon Tree Boa we found by boat in Peru. These snakes are commonly found in branches overhanging tributaries of the Amazon river, where they can be seen by distinctive eyeshine at night.
Amazon Harlequin Toad
This pretty little toad is in steep decline within its range in the Amazon basin. In some pockets, however, they can be locally abundant. This is one of several seen in a short amount of time on a daytime hike through the rainforest at the start of 2024.
Collared Tree Runner from Peru
Collared Tree Runner from Peru, found sleeping in low branches on a night time walk through the rainforest.
Common Stream-side Lizard
Like a lizard with the body of a crocodilian – a Common Stream-side Lizard found in Peru a few years ago.
Two-Striped Forest Pitviper
A tiny Two-Striped Forest Pitviper (Bothrops bilineatus) from Loreto, Peru. This was the first I’d ever seen and it didn’t disappoint. Just a beautiful little green snake with a hint of blue.
Amazon Tree Boa
One of several Amazon Tree Boas we found on a night time boat ride in Peru.
Fer-de-lance On The Trail
Only a half mile from camp into a night hike in the Peruvian Amazon, I saw this Fer-de-lance moving to an elevated position on a meter-high buttress … right in the middle of the trail. These snakes can be anywhere at any time.
